Neck Pain
Neck pain can often be debilitating. Typically, patients present with either minor or major neck pain to our office. Minor neck pain typically involves sensations of discomfort, stiffness or soreness. When these symptoms last for more than 24 hours, occur frequently or were preceded by an accident or some type of injury, we consider it major neck pain.
The causes of neck pain are numerous. The most common type of neck pain we treat is pain that was caused by an accident or traumatic event, such as a car accident, sports injury or fall. These types of neck pain often cause damage to the ligaments, muscles, discs and bones in a person’s neck. If not treated properly these types of injuries can lead to lifelong pain and suffering and significant arthritis.
Frequently, a physical, emotional or chemical stress can affect the frequency and severity of neck pain. For many of us, the neck and upper shoulders is where stress shows up. Often, emotional stress is the overlooked culprit. Picture in your mind a person who is depressed. Typically a depressed person or one under a lot of emotional stress, slumps forward, their head/eyes tends to look at the ground and the shoulders are rounded. This posture leads to neck and upper shoulder/back pain. Fear, anger or frustration can trigger the tightening of our neck muscles without our even being conscious. In time, chronic muscle spasms set in. Which can lead to headaches. Some over-the-counter pain relievers might dull the pain, but it ignores the underlying cause leading to degenerative arthritis or worse.
